See video clips of locations and discuss whatever questions arise. Already the class is becoming pretty popular. See the community class schedule to check on the schedule week to week.
Bible Q&A
Q: Why did Paul tell Timothy to drink a little wine for his stomach in 1 Tim. 5:23?
A: Anyone traveling overseas quickly learns the mantra, “Don’t drink the local water.” In Timothy’s day that could easily have been the case and Paul was counseling him to drink something else.
I expect the reason for the question is because someone wonders why Paul would suggest drinking alcohol when the rest of the Bible speaks against it. Some argue that there is health value in wine because of the alcohol. However, that claim doesn’t hold up against the science, which proves that those health properties are actually found in grape juice. It all reminds me of the argument over tobacco some years back. Thankfully the science has been finally accepted on that one.
In the original language the same word “Oinos” was used for fermented and unfermented juice. So from the text alone we can’t tell which one Paul was recommending. Therefore, which is the safer way to deal with the question? Is it safer to set aside the general direction of the Bible concerning “strong drink” in order to think that Paul was telling Timothy to drink fermented wine, or would it be safer to think that Paul was referring to unfermented juice and thereby agree with the rest of scripture? Taking 1 Tim. 5:23 all by itself either option is possible, but taking the Bible as a whole only one option makes sense. For me that’s a slam-dunk.
